All Good Things Must Come To An End

As you all know, I have been doing WordPress plugins and supporting it for the past 6 years. These 6 years of my life, I have been through my polytechnic education, my national service as well as my university education.

I just graduated from university in December 2009 and have been looking for full-time jobs. I am offered a full-time job and will be starting work on 1st February 2010.

I regret to say that I am NOT ABLE to provide support for my plugins anymore due to my full-time job commitment. I will leave this forum open and let the community help one another.

However, I WILL still update my plugins whenever I can and you still can report bugs to me via email and I will try to fix it.

If it is what you're suspecting how do I fix the two issues (memory and permissions)?

Could you check the error_log for the error?

I looked in the error log and couldn't find it.  But the error log is very confusing so I called Blue Host, my web host, and the person wasn't helpful.  He told me that everyone on the box, it is shared hosting, gets to see everyone else's error in the error log.  That doesn't sound true to me, its a security and privacy issue, and he couldn't find anything for me.

I know it happened, several times, but I can't find anything for the time frame.  I tried duplicating the error while on the phone with him and it would not happen.  All I have to go on is that it is a 500 error, the time I gave from my previous post, and the bit of code that the error threw.

I can try to take a screenshot next time it happens but I'm not sure how much more information you can gleam from that.  Since the widget is a widget, and in the sidebar, half of it gets cut off when the error is thrown because it shows an error page.

Right after I typed the above post it happened.  So I took two screenshots (it is really long) and called Blue Host again (no help but going to submit a ticket to their Scripting department).  The screenshots are below.  I'm hoping this will help you.

Here are the screenshots (you can see the error at right):

I also encounter the 500 error but not all the time.  It works fine excluding some times.  For example, I used the search feature on my blog to look for some posts.  I found what I needed but noticed in my sidebar that the widget gave me a 404 error.  I've reproduced the text below as best as possible.  I followed all the steps to install and activate the plugin, and the widget plugin afterwards, and it works fine on my main page and elsewhere.  I've noticed this error when search results are shown and I believe also when clicking a tag from my tag cloud and seeing all the posts with the same tag.

You can see an example of what I mean by going to http://wargamingforums.com/?s=combat+storm.  Scroll down and look at the right sidebar for the User Online box.  You should get the same error message.  If it looks odd that is my custom 500 error page.  I don't know why the error shows twice in the box.

This code is probably cut off at the end.  You'll see what I mean when you go to the page.

I don't know how to fix this and hope you can help me.

I was afraid of that.  There's 100+ custom field entries with keys that seem to mention Askimet.  I posted a comprehensive list at http://wordpress.org/support/topic/160383?.

I'm not so good at the phpmyadmin but I have a friend who is.  I can see if he can work on it for me.  Do you happen to have an idea of how all these duplicates made their way into custom fields?  I realize you can't speak for the other plugins but maybe you have thoughts regarding yours?

5
How do I fix the issue now even though you have fixed it.  Somehow it managed to crop up on my blog and sadly your plugin isn't the only one dealing with this.  It looks like podPress (2nd worse offender), Askimet (the worst offender), and Similar Posts (3rd worst offender) also are involved.  It didn't become this bad until I upgraded from WP 2.5 RC1 to WP 2.5.  I didn't have the problem at all until I started using WP 2.5 RC1.

6
Duplicate as in what appears to be exact copies of the same thing.  ratings fields, several, that have the same value of 0 or other values.  Things like that.  Same key and same value.  Perhaps my word choice isn't ideal.

Thanks for the info.  I did an update on WP at http://wordpress.org/support/topic/160383?.  I do have quite a few duplicate entries for WP-PostRatings though.  Was able to look at it and not sure why but they exist.  I think, all told for everything, I have 3 or 400 custom fields and no idea how they were all created or how to remedy this.  Consider me bewildered.

WP-PostRatings / Unresponsive Script caused by Custom fields

My question deals with many of your plugins but am posting it here because I first noticed it with PostRatings.  Do your plugins add entries to the custom fields and could this result in an unresponsive script and a browser screeching to a halt thereby throwing an "Unresponsive Script" error?

I came across this ever since I upgraded to WP 2.5 RC1 and it has gotten worse in WP 2.5.  I try to write a post but the browser halts with that error.  I looked on WP and some others had the same problem but nobody came up with a solution.  I've noticed in my custom fields that several plugins show up and it appears like they give numerous entries that are the same.

I've seen the above listed plugins from you plus Similar Posts and Podpress.  Since I didn't get any help from the official WP board I thought I'd check here, and with the other plugin creators, for information.  I love your plugins and don't want to remove them if I don't have to.  Of course, I'm not sure if that'll fix the issue or not either.

Alternate icons would be great.  I'd love to see what else you have available besides the ones that ship with the plugin.

Hmm good question.  I think I did the WP upgrade and then installed postratings.  But, don't hold me to that.  It has been a tough couple weeks.  This is a redundant question after reading your blog post but if I download your beta plugins and overwrite my existing ones the problem should go away?

I recently underwent a server move so in addition to installing a new WP, and then upgrading it to 2.5 RC1, I installed WP-PostRatings and made sure it was updated to the most recent copy available from WP.

As soon as I installed the plugin I made sure that it would create logs of who rates the posts.  But, when I go to look at the logs in the WP Admin Center there are no logs.  It says, "No Post Ratings Logs Found"

Why is this and how do I remedy it?

Is it possible to change the image choices by adding more images to the images folder in the plugin?  Will those show up in the Ratings Options section?  Is any other work required?  Also, who created the new images for this plugin?  I've love to contact them about making a dice image to use in this plugin.  Since my blog is a gaming one having people choose how many dice (think stars) would be fun and in character.

Thanks again for yet another great plugin!

WP-PostRatings / Re: 5 Hearts?
« on: 25 March 2008, 17:51 »
What is the point of the heart if it is kept at the default of 1 heart?  One user rates it and the heart goes active.  I haven't seen it allow a user to vote on it after that.  Is that just me or an actual situation?  I could understand if others were able to click the heart and it showed how many times people "hearted" the post.

WP-PostRatings / Re: Ratings Not Clickable
« on: 25 March 2008, 17:49 »
I heard back from BlueHost who says the problem is permissions.  I had the permissions set at 777 and they said the permissions need to be more restrictive.  They suggested 644.  That seems counterintuitive to me but it seems to be working.

I've heard of more restrictive permissions stopping a component from working properly.  But, I've never heard of a 777 or 755 permission from causing something to malfunction.

Thanks.  I've found that if a direction, even a broad one, is had the hosting companies are more able to find the problem and resolve it....if they're willing to begin with.  Most won't touch 3rd party software like WP even if the WP problem is because of a server setting they made.

I submitted a ticket to Blue Host and I'll let you know whatever I find out.  Maybe it'll help someone else.  :)

May I ask what, in particular, I should ask my web host company to look for so this can be rectified?

WP-PostRatings / Re: "i like it" plugin
« on: 24 March 2008, 07:24 »
The thumbs up/down + custom ratings are already available in the plugin. I have not tested on the "I like this": which is basically a 1 star rating while the thumbs up/down is a 2 stars rating in disguise

For some reason those have never shown until I updated to WP 2.5 RC1.  Not sure why but at least they show now.
